Gospel of John: The Man Born Blind

The context for this story is Sukkot from John 7-9 and one of the backdrops is the ceremony of the lighting of lampstands in the Court of the Women. It is the seventh day of the festival, Hoshannah Rabbah, meaning the day of the Great Salvation. Here the blind man becomes a picture of “every man.” He is born blind not because of his parents, but because sin entered the world when Adam violated the commandments.
